Mediterranean diet expected to gain popularity among U.S. consumers

A non-profit group Oldways, which supports the "whole Grains" stamp on a number of food products, recently announced that U.S. consumers will start promoting the Mediterranean diet.

The group says it is launching a campaign to help educate American consumers of long-term health benefits of Mediterranean-style eating: Oldways then create a consumer-friendly symbol - much like his "whole grains" food stamp help flag, which corresponds to the Mediterranean diet.

Science behind the heart healthy Mediterranean style of eating, which emphasizes fruits, cereals, whole grains, legumes, fish and olive oil, to obtain popular media in recent years: Oldways says that he intends to use science to become well-known dietary in the United States.

"Governments have failed every time they try to persuade the public to eat and drink healthily», - said the president of Oldways Dun Gifford. "But food manufacturers respond to consumer demand, our job is to create consumer demand for healthy foods eaten in a healthy sample."

Oldways, the Boston-based think tank, says he expects to unveil its "Mediterranean" symbol before the first quarter of 2007. Symbol will also be unveiling Oldways », a four-year campaign to promote healthy lifestyle in the Mediterranean.

"New scientific evidence exists," said Gifford. "The second step is to communicate to consumers that the evidence, and the third step involves connecting the science of food."

Although Gifford says it will take some time, U.S. producers and consumers become comfortable with Mediterranean lifestyle, he has no doubt that the diet will be a success.

"We expect that the education campaign in the last four years, because that is how long it takes to be effective and to develop strength," said Gifford. «Merchandisers and food manufacturers should be aware that this is something that can be trusted, that will be around a long time, and something that will get people's attention."

The Mediterranean diet is expected to be more effective than other popular diets, because it is not restrictive, stressing, eat the right foods, including pasta and vegetables.
